ステフィン・キーン・フィリアトローはカナダ、バンクーバーに生まれ、セントラル・ブリティッシュ・コロンビアの小さな町、サーモン・アームで育った。そこはヒッピーとレッドネックが人生を考えに来る町だった。家族といとこたち（大人4人と子ども7人!!）とで行ったチェリービルのカントリーフェアでは、幸せそうな家族連れ ―お父さんはカメラ、お母さんはビーズのバッグだけを身に着けた― を見た。
僕の人生は、いとこのデニスが町にやってきた時に突然変わった。おお、デニス!! デニスは僕にあの伝説のアルバム「Led Zeppelin IV」を買ってくれただけでなく、彼は映画「The Last Days Of The Third Reich（第三帝国最後の日）」を見に連れて行ってくれた。「Led Zeppelin IV」のA面1曲目「Black Dog」を聞いて、ベースをやりたくてたまらなくなった。親愛なるママのマーガレットは、なんとその夢を叶えてくれて（それが最初のフェンダー・プレジション・レプリカ）、さらに幸運だったのはラリー・キーツに出会った事だった。彼は地元のレコード会社「エーコン・ミュージック」のオーナーで、いつも僕らに月代わりで新しい楽器を試させてくれた。新品のフェンダー・ベースマンが人生最初アンプってすごくない？
スティーブはグルメである。朝食の好みを尋ねられたら、必ず僕はこう答える。「炊き立てのライスと、ワカメとシメジのミソスープにナットウ（玉葱と葱のダブルオニオン!!）、メンタイコ（九州産のスパイシーなやつね）、シシャモ（タマゴをたっぷり）そしてライスの上にはナマタマゴ。美味しいねえ・・・ 人生の最高の幸せはあらゆるサシミがテーブルに並んでいる時。あえて言うなら脂がのったトロとサンマ、ウニ、アワビの肝。ああ〜。サシミのディナーにはツケモノ盛り合わせと、全てを優しく包み込むダイギンジョウが欠かせない・・・

Stephen Kean Filiatrault was born in Vancouver, Canada and grew up in a small town in central British Columbia called Salmon Arm. Lots of hippies and rednecks to get a broad vision of life. Nothing like going to the Cherryville fair with your family and cousins (7 kids and 4 adults) and seeing a happy family walking around wearing, well, only a camera (him) and her carrying a beaded handbag.
Life changed dramatically when older cousin Dennis rolled through town. This guy is awesome! Not only did he take me and buy me Led Zeppelin IV in 1977, he also took me to the movies to see "The Last Days Of The Third Reich". How could I not want to start playing the bass after hearing track one, side one of IV (Black Dog). Margaret (dear Mom) was kind enough to oblige (Fender Precision replica) and I was most fortunate enough to run into Larry Keats. He was the owner of Acorn Music and always let us pay of our (new) gear by the month. Nothing like a brand new Fender Bassman for your first amp, eh?
Steve is a gourmet; Ask me what I want for breakfast and the answer will always be the same. Piping hot bowl of fresh rice, miso soup with wakame and shimeji, nattoh (fermented soy beans double onions please), mentaiko (spicy herring roe fresh from Kyushu), shishamo (smelts loaded with roe), and a fresh egg to pour over the rice. Yummy! Life doesn't get better than when there is a variety plate of raw fish on the table, hopefully with lots of fatty bonito, saury pike, sea urchin, and abalone livers. No raw fish dinner is complete with out the array of Japanese style pickles and some cold daigijnou rice wine to wash it all down with.
